Keep It at the Kitchen Table

To say this has been a bad two weeks for the fire service would be an understatement. We've lost FAO Daryl Gordon, of the Cincinnati (OH) Fire Department. We all viewed in horror as Captain Peter Dern, of the Fresno (CA) Fire Department, fell through the roof at a structure fire. A hostage situation at a suburban Pennsylvania fire company made the national news. And just a few minutes ago, I received the USFA notification that we lost a pilot and firefighter in a helicopter crash while they…

Steve Skipton--We Got This with You!

As we age, we pick up more aches and pains, people come in and out of our lives, and occasionally we learn that a friend we've known for what seems like ever comes up against the challenge of a lifetime. So is the case with a friend of mine for many years who many fire service members know, Steve…

Some Thoughts on 20 Years in the Fire Service

Twenty years ago today, I was voted into probationary membership at Weldon Fire Company. Although 20 years is an early career for many, 20 years gets you certain privileges at Weldon. For example, when you achieve 20 years as an active member, you become a "life member." As a life member, your requirements to remain a member in good standing decrease, you no longer pay your membership dues every year, and even if you don't remain active, you are still a member until you choose to…

Video from Detroit (MI) Fire Taken by Drone

Think drones aren't the real deal?

Take a look at this video from Detroit, Michigan at a structure fire in which two firefighters were injured. Although it is unclear whether or not the Detroit (MI) Fire Department requested the drone, as you watch the video, it is clear that technology like this can, and will, be invaluable to the fire service.

Consider being able to tell apparatus operators where to direct their aerial master streams from above the fire.

This article…

Fire Apparatus Driver/Officer Negligence

I recently returned from the 2013 FDSOA Apparatus Symposium. I returned to temperatures in the teens (remember to circulate the water in those pumps if you're out for a prolonged period of time in this weather), and although the weather wasn't perfect for being in Florida, it certainly was nice being in a more temperate climate for a little while.

Every year the…
